What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT)?
CMT is a group of genetic conditions affecting the peripheral nerves, which control movement and sensation in the limbs. It leads to muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and difficulties with balance and mobility. It is a progressive condition, meaning symptoms worsen over time, often beginning in adolescence or early adulthood. It affects 1 in 2,500 people.
How is CMT diagnosed?
Through genetic testing, nerve conduction studies, and/or a review of family history.
What are the common symptoms for CMT?
Foot drop, muscle atrophy, loss of reflexes, and difficulties with walking.
How does CMT progress?
Symptoms usually start in the feet and legs, progressing to the hands and arms over time. The rate of progression varies.
Is there a cure for CMT?
Currently, there is no cure.
